I’ve been busy in 2023, writing for both news networks and brands while also debuting my new solo show in Toronto. And I was able to hop on an arts podcast to talk writing and how I help coach other folks to level up their writing skills.
It’s been a bit since I’ve updated this blog with my latest published articles. So let’s take a look at where my byline has appeared recently…
BBC News
In my sixth year freelancing for BBC, I’m having a blast writing on a wide variety of topics, with tech and business being the central thread running through them all.
Farming is known for lagging behind other sectors in digitizing their operations but some future-savvy folks are bringing high-tech weed spraying machines to their hectares. Machine learning and AI are key to some of these startups aiming to digitize how farmers weed out harmful plants from their crops.
Recently I also write about how entrepreneurs are sharing their tales of failure to inspire others who are bored of going to conferences and only hearing success stories.
Fast Company
In my first article for Fast Company (one of my fave tech magazines), I shared the fascinating rise of several fashion designers who create clothes for the visually impaired. Braille beads on shirts and pants can tell the wearer what the item or share inspiring messages about disability rights, and I can’t wait to see how far these businesses will go in the coming years.
Toronto Star
My output for the Star has slowed in 2023 but what I do get to tackle for Canada’s most read newspaper continues to fuel my journalistic curiosity. I’ve always wondered what makes a tapas spot so popular, and so I was excited to profile Mezzetta on St. Clair West. The story of the Iranian owner’s travels from his home country to escape oppression and find a new opportunity with a restaurant makes for an engaging read.
Avenue Magazine
If you’re unfamiliar with this glossy mag in Calgary, consider it the Toronto Life of Alberta. Wait, don’t know Toronto Life? Where ya been all these years?!
For Avenue, I pitched a profile of Calgary poet laureate Wakefield Brewster who used to frequent my poetry series in North York when I lived with my parents. Brewster is truly a fascinating and energetic guy, and I was overjoyed to finally write about a poet superstar for a well-paying mag. As you know, poetry and spoken word are close to my heart ever since I started writing creatively when I was a teen and then founded Toronto Poetry Slam in 2005.
Stratcann
If you know me, you know I’ve been writing on cannabis for more than a decade. Many cannabis news outlets have come and gone so I’m always on the prowl for a consistent home for my cannabis journalism. Stratcann has fit the bill so far, and I’ve been writing a range of content for them.
Lately, I penned a piece on Canadian cannabis firms seeking export markets, and earlier I wrote about the challenges some businesses face when they want to ship their products to other provinces.
Alumni magazines
Writing for alumni magazines has long been a strong source of income. This spring and summer has given me the opportunity to profile a variety of intriguing graduates from institutions ranging from the University of Texas to Oberlin to the University of Minnesota.
I wrote about a successful memoirist and MacArthur Fellow, a CEO focused on instilling play into a child’s upbringing, and a super-smart scientist aiming to extend the human lifespan.
I’ll update this blog more often with additional clips of my most recent work, and I’ll also keep you all posted when you can check out another staging of my solo show Before & After.
